ISO/TS 16949 has undergone a substantial change and now as IATF 16949 will bring new requirements to the automotive sector. With the truncated timeline of less than two years, understanding and implement the required changes will be a challenge to most organizations.
BSI presents a 12 part video series, hosted by Paul Hardiman, an internationally recognized IATF trainer and automotive expert, breaks down the changes as they directly impact various processes across the organization. Paul takes the viewer through each area offering suggestions, best practice and guidance on how the new standard is to be implemented in an organization.
As IATF 16949 must be implemented in conjunction with ISO 9001, Paul uses both standards to underscore the changes that are required, often relying on the turtle diagram to walk the viewer through the various stages in implementing the standards.
While the videos can be viewed in any order and revisited as often as needed, we would suggest the following pattern:
- Managing the transition from ISO-TS 16949 to IATF 16949:2016 This video starts with the ISO 9001:2015 changes as it is important to understand the basis of the new ISO 9001 standard and the new ISO structure, known as Annex SL. The ISO 9001 standard changes and the new structure flow-down to IATF 16949.
- Planning the transition (including summary of major changes) This video goes through the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle to indicate the changes, including the fundamental change of Risk-Based Thinking and management’s responsibility to push this risk-based thinking throughout the organizations.
- Process approach including risk based thinking This video shows where risk-based thinking is applied throughout the PDCA cycle and how both top management and process owners are responsible for documenting evidence that risk and opportunity have been identified and controlled.
- Key changes Top Management One of the biggest changes to ISO 9001:2015 and thus, IATF 16949 is the engagement of Top Management/Leadership in ensuring quality is woven throughout all the process in the organization. This video guides the viewer through areas where Top Management now needs to demonstrate their involvement.
- Key changes affecting Production Using turtle diagrams this video reviews the inputs and outputs required in the production process to understand and meet the customer’s requirements.
- Key changes affecting Human resources Human resources play a very important role in the new standards. The commitment of top management with regards to human resources in discussed in this video as well as communication within the organization and the resources required to meet customer requirements. Human resources also ensure the competency of the various process owners across the organization.
- Key changes affecting Product & Process Design & Development This video reviews the new standards increased emphases and new requirements regarding design and development including what needs to be documented and ensuring process design and development is separated from product design and development.
- Key changes affecting Internal audits This video provides an overview of the inputs and outputs that can be expected during a properly executed process Internal Audit and includes the need to ensure the competency of the internal auditors.
- Key changes affecting Supplier Management This is another area that has been expanded in the new ISO 9001:2015 standard as well as IATF 16949. Examples are used in this video to illustrate the new requirements by the new standards. There is increased emphasis on communication with suppliers to ensure they adhere to regulatory/statutory regulations as well any specific customer requirements.
- Key changes affecting Sales This video highlights the need for the sales personnel to have a higher level of competency and be able to understand the risk and opportunities in pursuing new contracts and the ability of the organization to meet customer requirements.
- Key changes affecting Plant and facility equipment and tooling This video reviews the new standards and their increased emphases on maintenance and overhaul plans, ensuring capacity requirements can be met, as well as various other demands placed on equipment.
- Key changes affecting Monitoring and measurement of product The discussion in this video covers the role customer requirements play as well as the demands of other stakeholders in conducting system audits, process audits and product audits.
